What makes a number plate legal in Ireland?
A road-legal Irish number plate must:
- Display your exact registered number (as recorded with the RSA/NVDF)
- Be made from rigid reflective white acrylic (front and rear)
- Include the mandatory Euroband (blue band with IRL and 12 gold stars) on the left
- Use the correct font and character dimensions
- Meet the size requirements (520×110mm standard car, 340×220mm square/motorcycle)
- Have no yellow rear plate (unlike the UK, yellow rear plates are illegal in Ireland)
Free Euroband: Some suppliers charge extra for the Euroband. We include it on every road-legal plate at no charge — it's legally required and we don't treat it as an optional extra.
What are show plates?
Show plates (also called display plates or novelty plates) are not manufactured to road-legal standards. They are intended for:
- Photography and photoshoots
- Track days and motorsport events
- Display in garages, showrooms, or at car shows
- Gifts or novelty items
Show plates must not be fitted to a vehicle driven on a public road. Using a non-legal plate on a public road is an offence under the Road Traffic Act.
Are 3D and 4D plates legal in Ireland?
Yes, provided they meet all the other requirements listed above. The raised characters (gel for 3D, laser-cut acrylic for 4D) do not in themselves make a plate illegal. What matters is the font, dimensions, reflective background, Euroband, and correct registration.
